Life After Life

Does such a thing exist?

Apologies for the delay in banging this one out. I’m sure you can understand that it takes a decent amount of time to get the brain back in gear after a wild weekend in Belvedere. Yop Westmeath!

We left Galway in torrential rain on Friday evening. Biblical stuff until we reached Athlone, the Equator of Ireland, where the sun was streaming down. Fake tan intact, we unpacked in Belvedere Gardens, threw up a tent and headed for the stages to catch the last 15 seconds of Eats Everything. Patrick Topping was up next. Mixed reviews on this one. Chatter on the campsite was that he wouldn’t mix cement but the District 8 tent was packed to capacity and everyone was groovin’. Alan Fitz took things up a level closing the stage and we stepped out halfway. We wandered to the Main Stage and our timing was perfect as we got there just in time to hear Format B banging out Chunky. Yurt. We wound up staying for DJ EZ who was fantastic in a really cheesy way. Think 6AM at a house party breaking into the Golden Oldies vault. If you put a gun to my head I’d be hard pushed to remember a single track but I know they were good because according to Fitbit I was bopping till the wee hours.

Patrick Topping @ Life Festival 2017

Saturday was filthy, both in terms of the music and the weather. It rained all day and all night and things got a little bit warpy. Looking at the videos on Tune Drop it looks like the stages were absolutely bopping, especially Boots and Kats on the Toast Stage and their dawn rave. The kept the crowd rocking as the sun came up, or at least attempted to, over the lake.

Lake Stage @ Life Fest 2017

In a slight change to schedule, Ricardo Villalobos played in the District 8 Tent on account of the rain. He was immense but much better suited to a later time slot. It’s hard to give him 110% at 1PM in the day. Maya Jane, the Queen, delivered in spades down on the Mainstage and Get Down Edits were a very tasty addition to the day. Duke Dumont closed the Main Stage on Saturday, banging out all the big hits although we opted for the covered Index Stage instead.

Like I said, things got warpy. Tent, Saturday, Life 2017.

Sunday got off to an early start and an early finish with Nina Kravitz taking to the stage at around half 10. Sunday day disappeared Down the Rabbite Hole but the sun shone, the gazebo parties were hopping and the craic was had so, all in all, happy fucking days. Hard to believe how fast the weekend zipped by but congrats to all involved in delivering another stellar Life Fest! Festival season 2017 is off to a flying start and definitely looking forward to the next few weeks and months.

As the fella said, YOP WESTMEATH.

Happy Hour: Life Festival Special

Festival season is firmly upon us with Life Festival bringing proceedings to a whomping, stomping start this weekend.

As always, the organisers have pulled out all the stops in terms of lineup with a stellar installment of headliners like Patrick Topping, Eats Everything, Nina Kravitz, Format B, Duke Dumont, Rudimental, Gorgon City and Maya Jane Coles taking to the stages across the three days.

Line-up, Life 2017

Belvedere House and Gardens again plays host to the festival in what is certainly one of the most picturesque locations in the country for a big dirty rave. If this heat wave we’re promised ever materialises, sunset at the lake will be spectacular! Last year was an absolute scorcher so praying for more of the same for this year. Unfortunately the forecast for Saturday isn’t looking too fresh but, we live in hope!

This leads us nicely to last night’s Happy Hour Life Special. The second hour got pretty loud and I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t a fair amount of groovin’ in studio. Tracklist is below and here’s a link to the Mixcloud, give it a listen and let me know what you think.

For anyone still looking, weekend tickets (Tier 4) are still availible on Tickemaster. Get ’em here Tickets

Happy Hour: Castlepalooza Special

With festival season 2k16 well and truly underway, we’ll be continuing our series of festival previews focussing on Castlepalooza this week. Palooza takes place this weekend, July 1-3 in Charleville Castle, Tullamore.

You snooze, you Palooz.

Set on the ground of the 17th century Charleville Castle, as music festivals go, you couldn’t find a more imposing setting. Castle – check. Turrets – check. Ireland’s oldest oak woods – check. Indoor toilets – check. Hell, the place even has a frickin moat!!

Now in it’s tenth year, Castlepalooza has gone from strength to strength. From it’s humble beginnings in 2006, with 1,000 people gathered to watch headline acts the Blizzards and Republic of Loose the 2008 fesitval increased capacity to 2,000 people and was nominated for ‘Best European Festival’ at the UK Festival Awards. Castlepalooza was nominated for ‘Best Small Festival’ at the European Music Festival Awards in 2009, 2010 and 2011. It was also a finalist in the Event Industry Award 2011 under ‘Best Live Music or Entertainment Event’ & ‘Best Green Event’ categories respectively thanks to the festivals committment to the restoration and preservation of its historic surrounds (a percentage of each ticket is donated to the Charleville Castle Restoration Project) (kudos)

Over the years, line ups have included steallar Irish and International talent with acts like Fight Like Apes, David Kitt, O Emperor, Daithi, James Vincent McMorrow, Jape, Scroobius Pip, Little Green Cars and Le Galaxie taking to the Castle stage to woo crowds with their eclectic styles. This year is no different with Caribou, Jurassic 5, Oh Boland, Daithi, Colm Mac an Iomaire, Alle Farben and Villagers all featuring.

The only drawback is that you are NOT allowed to bring alcohol onsite. You can, however, buy alcohol inside using a token system. It’s a nuisance but it’s in keeping with the medieval castle vibe so we’ll let them off the hook.

Here’s the playlist from our Happy Hour Castlepalooza Special. Enjoy! (Palooza tunes in Pink)
